Schedule of Events Below for both the SPRI Conference and 29th Session of ICUMSA

Ribeirão Preto, S.P. Brasil

Ribeirão Preto – (Black Brook or Black Stream) is a municipality and city in the Northeastern region of the state of São Paulo in Brazil.  It is nicknamed Brazilian California, because of a combination of an economy based on agribusiness plus high technology, wealth and sunny weather all year long. The city’s origin began around 1856 by farmers coming from the southeast of São Paulo State in search of good climate and soil for coffee growing.  The city was laid by a stream called Black Creek, and was named after it. Following a rapid development of coffee cultivation, by 1880’s the city made its mark on the world scene as the largest coffee producer in the world.  By 1888 there was a demand for labor by the ‘coffee barons’ and with slavery finally abolished it stimulated growth with a European migration of workers from Portugal, Spain, Italy and Germany.  Now Ribeirão Preto is the eighth largest municipality in the state of São Paulo.  The city is known for its many parks and home to the Pingium Draft Beer. We welcome you to enjoy all that the city of Ribeirão Preto has to offer during your stay of the SPRI and ICUMSA meetings.
